While it has been known by many scientists for nearly a year, the World Health Organization recently acknowledged that the PCR test generates an inordinate number of false positives. It’s new guidance regarding use of the PCR test almost guarantees that COVID “case numbers” will drop around the world.
The large number of false positive generated from the PCR test is the most likely reason why we have so many “COVID cases” but an overall mortality rate that is about normal.

Doesn’t the data show a big spike in mortality during this winter?

I prefer to look at excess mortality as this provides data that are not dependent on the change in CDC definition for determining a “COVID fatality.” You can go here https://ourworldindata.org/excess-mortality-covid for excess mortality data by country. Yes, excess mortality in the US did have a bump up this winter in overall fatalities compared to the past several years. Mark
